From Engagement to Excellence: How Pearl Fosters Employee Growth & Performance

Pearl Health helps care teams deliver more proactive care for their patients—and get rewarded for keeping patients healthy. We do this by aligning incentives with better outcomes and empowering providers with actionable intelligence through our AI-powered technology platform. To achieve this ambitious mission, we know how important it is to cultivate a work environment that uses passion to drive performance.

Creating a thriving workplace starts with investing in your people. For a start-up, this may look different than some of the ‘typical’ costly and low-lift offerings larger companies provide (e.g. tuition reimbursements, attending large conferences)—it often requires more creativity. Call us biased, but we believe that this creativity results in a more personalized, impactful experience for individuals to reach their full potential.

The Importance of Employee Engagement

Engagement is the foundation of a successful organization. Engaged employees are more productive, which leads to improved business outcomes. Pearl recognizes that engaged employees are ones that feel heard, build connections, and can contribute as their most authentic selves. We aspire to foster an environment that helps our team thrive by prioritizing:
  • Inclusive Culture: We address unconscious bias through comprehensive bias training. This ensures that all employees have equal opportunities to succeed, and that our Interview Process is as fair as possible.
  • Work-life Balance: We recognize the importance of life-work balance and how time away from work responsibilities contributes to a happier and healthier workforce. We have a take-what-you-need policy that allows for flexibility along with quarterly check-ins on minimum usage to make sure team members feel comfortable taking time away.
  • Opportunities for Connection: Pearl Health offers a mix of virtual and in-person events, including holiday parties, workout classes, and team gatherings (to name a few!) designed to foster connection and well-being. This year, we’re especially excited for our company retreat in May, where our team will come together for an unforgettable experience focused on collaboration, growth, and fun!

Investing in Professional Development

Professional development can bolster employees’ confidence in their work, contributing to higher overall job satisfaction, productivity, performance, and morale. By providing employees with opportunities to learn new skills, gather expert knowledge, identify areas for improvement, and envision their career goals, Pearl creates a unique pathway for meaningful growth in skills and confidence. Our strategies for professional development include:
  • New Hire Orientation: While employees have the option to be fully remote or hybrid, we provide an in-person orientation to offer meaningful opportunities for learning from the beginning. During this three-day event we provide in-depth information from leaders in the business around Pearl Health and value-based care, as well as social events to build connection.
  • Learning and Development: Our Friday Lunch and Learns provide a space for employees to gain insights from leaders across the Healthcare industry, learn from internal subject matter experts, and engage with motivational content. These sessions foster professional growth, industry awareness, and team inspiration in an informal, engaging setting.
  • Regular Feedback and Recognition: Performance reviews should be a tool for growth, not just assessment. Providing constructive feedback and celebrating achievements helps employees stay motivated. We conduct trainings for both managers and individual contributors on how to make the most of these bi-annual conversations. Outside of performance reviews we know that real success comes from acknowledging every step forward—we do this through shoutouts in Slack channels and our weekly Team Summit, and encouraging a culture of gratitude.
  • Career Progression: Pearl has always encouraged the growth of our team and made efforts to from promote within—over half of the employees who have been with Pearl for more than a year have been promoted. We also created a program for employees to identify their career aspirations with support from Pearl. By encouraging employees to explore new roles and career paths within the organization we are building a culture of growth in both traditional and innovative ways.

The Result: Success

Promotions are a critical aspect of professional recognition, so while they are not the only barometer for success, they serve as a clear representation of the team’s development. We are proud to highlight the Pearl Health team members who received promotions or made exciting career pivots over the course of 2024.
