With value-based care… that allows us more time to spend with our patients to really identify who is at risk and who needs the most, who's missing things, who might need touching more often — an interactional kind of relationship… where we're really looking at someone as a whole.

Dr. Janice Johnston is a family practice provider in Phoenix, Arizona. She leads an active family practice and cares for patients of Redirect Health as well as its Arrowhead Health Centers — a comprehensive and integrated network of Patient Centered Medical Homes (NCQA Level 3) and surgery centers. Together with her husband, Dr. David Berg, she co-founded Redirect Health, where she serves as the company’s Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Johnston oversees all medical operations and is responsible for the patient experience, spearheading efforts to enhance quality care while improving administrative efficiencies.

Dr. Johnston is an integral part of the operations of Redirect Health, continually advancing strategies to improve member service and ensure positive patient outcomes. She mentors staff and medical students at the facilities, helping others understand and operate within the patient-centered healthcare model that she has driven in recent years. She has been recognized numerous times by AZ Business Magazine in the categories of “Most Influential Women Business Leaders,” “Outstanding Medical Director,” and “Telehealth Leader.” She holds an M.D. from the University of Toronto and is currently a Health Insider for ABC15.

Outside of her role at Redirect Health, she volunteers her medical services and expertise to musicians with music being a long-time passion of hers. She was a recipient of the “Keeping the Blues Alive” award for her work advocating for musicians’ health. Additionally, Dr. Johnston is part of the MusicCares Provider Network through the Grammy Foundation.

Timely access to care is an issue that we see across the country... just fragmented care where you have pieces of care happening by one specialist or another specialist and not somebody being a quarterback to manage the care collectively. At Redirect Health, we really strive to be that person... to put it all together and to guide people through the system.

What I’m excited about with Pearl is the ability that I can see data and I can act on it. So now I can actually see information on the panel of patients that are assigned to us. We take care of those people, make actionable steps, and then it ultimately helps the health care of that person.

When I think of our relationship with Pearl, I think first of collaboration, and collaboratively identifying patients that require more attention and more care so that they can have the best outcomes possible.

What [value-based care] means to me is stopping the attention on the boxes and the numbers and starting to just take care of people. Then, all the metrics get met on their own rather than on the fee-for-service side of things, which is... more like [being] a mechanic than taking care of people.
